Lack of chives

Where are all the chives these days? I remember from my childhood, we always had chives for potato salad or normal salad or... er, well, that's about it actually, I'm sure there are at least three other things you can do with chives though.

I have not seen a single chive for at least ten years.

It is not right. It is like sparrows disappearing.

Spring onions have more flavour.

but it is a different flavour

I mean, you might as well say "onions have more flavour than leeks".

But potato salad is dull when made with chives rather than spring onions.

In a tub on my rooftop terrace - lots and lots of them - and Waitrose.

True. (Waitrose, though no-where else I've seen.) Apparently if you don't want parsley or coriander, you're out of luck.

I do seem to remember that the chives were actually straight from the garden though, along with rosemary/sage/thyme/marjoram/dill. We were blessed with a herb-rich childhood.

Where did they used to be? The two greengrocers over the road from me have them year-round, as does our local Sainsbury's. The farmer's market has them when they're in season, I think.

I haven't seen a sparrow in ages, though.

I think that in my childhood they _did_ mostly come from the garden, as mentioned above, but I can't remember having seen any in any of the grocers around here. I don't think Shepherds Bush is a very chivey area.

We have lots and lots because we have been feeding them for years - they get through 20 kg of seed a month ...
