The Land of Green Ginger

Feeling somewhat of the ill persuasion and being the person I am I thought in terms of medicinal booze. In the corner shop just now, I spied a bottle of Stone's Original Green Ginger Wine, something that I remember seeing regularly sitting around in my parents' wine rack but have never actually tried.

Stones Ginger Wine

"I remember my parents having this but I've never tried it," I said to the chap behind the counter, who said that a lot of people had been buying it, strong ginger wine, which was something I found rather surprising. "You'll have to tell me how it tastes tomorrow," he said. I have to report here on the Internet though that it tastes rather like flat ginger beer with booze in it.

Of course when I speak of ginger beer here I'm talking about proper ginger beer, not ginger ale or similar anaemic cocktail nonsense. D&G Old Jamaica with the stripy label, that sort of thing. To be honest a whole bottle of that would be harder to drink, though probably better for you in the end. I've not heard of anyone having a ginger hangover or ginger-related cirrhosis of the liver.

It's hard to imagine going wrong with that concept. Alas, life is full of disappointments.

You're supposed to cut the Stones with cheap whisky for the best effect. I also add freshly squeezed lemon juice, but that's possibly a bit lah-di-dah.

Uh, it's a drinker's drink, especially when it's on price promotion. Like that cheap sherry.

I was going to mention the whisky mac -- used to be a winter standby until I went off whisky, and now I just drink single malts. Talking of lah-di-dah!

It was being sold pretty close to the British sherry, yes. (Which, from what I can remember from student years, is actually not that bad for the price.)

I've been using mine to finish off the left over half bottle of Famous Grouse somebody inflicted on me at work. Half measure of each with ice, topped up with Diet Coke: just call it 'Grouse on a Beach'.

Has anyone ever told you that you bear a striking resemblance to Rafael Benitez?

I can't say they have but you know, they wouldn't be entirely wrong. I still have a bit more hair mind you.

My alcoholic uncle drank only Stones Ginger Wine or Barley Wine. Connoisseur.
