This evening apparently we have a police drama radio play on R4 involving a character who has Downs. He's got a... solicitor? official guardian? who is portrayed as an officious, interfering timewaster, trying to prevent the detective from emotionally pressuring the Downs guy into talking.

Of course, the logic of the story means that the detective is right to do that, and he's not exploiting the guy and getting him to confess to anything or twisting his words to get a conviction. There's no exploitation and suddenly, when sufficiently disturbed by the detective, the chap comes up with vital information. And really, the detective only has the best interests of everyone at heart.

Well that's okay then. Social workers, lawyers, eh, useless aren't they? We'd all be much better if the police did what they wanted.

Have you seen Law & Order: Special Victims Unit? The entire show is about a guy beating the shit out of people who he thinks might be bad guys, and how it is ok if he beats up the wrong person from time to time, because in the end he catches the bad guy.

Pssh, who needs civil rights?
