They're designed for you to hear stupid people talking in, though. I have never heard so many stupid things said as I have in supermarket lines.

I read personal finance blogs on a fairly regular basis. You would think someone who writes about personal finance on a regular basis would understand the difference between high income and wealth.

You would be dead wrong.

In point of fact, both sides of the aisle, politically, make this mistake. Depending on who they are they either believe income taxes punish the wealthy, or are designed to make the wealthy pay their fair share.

It took one reading of The Millionaire Next Door and having it thus articulated to me as "balance-sheet affluent" versus "income-statement affluent" to set me straight. Either these people have worse reading comprehension than I do, they're being deliberately obtuse, or they're setting themselves up as experts when they are nowhere near deserving of the label.

And that's the ones who are supposed to know something about it. So imagine how ignorant the average person on the street must be.

And this is not something they teach us in school.
