Dear Mice

What? What are you doing? Why are you at the corner of my kitchen where the plastic bags are? They're all empty you stupid beast. Also, when I disturb you and you run across the back of the hob to the corner near the spirits rack, don't just sit there when I give you a chance to move on from that point. Don't, especially, go back to the plastic bag box, then run away again to that corner when I return. Don't make me chase you out of there with a long wooden spoon just so that you bugger off down the side of the washing machine.

Honestly.

They're the new 'Gr33N miCe!', being spot tested around your area!

Tiny, friendly and cute; they remind you to R3Cycle! And you are a lucky recipient of a test unit!

Robot mice that remind you to recycle and do laundry.

*I learned that mice are gross when I found out that the reason they know where everything they've ever visited is, is because they pee constantly..and poop whenever.

I actually didn't mind them till that. I thought they were charmingly cute.>/small>

I still think they're cute, and way more sanitary than roaches, but they destroy things. I'd rather see them in a cage, between my cat's paws, or not here at all. Thankfully I don't seem to have them here. I had them for a little while at the previous place.

I have cats.
I always have had at least one at any given time.
I once lived with Kameer, the frighteningly-large-cat, who hunted and caught things, but didn't actually kill them. He dropped a live mouse on my bare tummy once, I was asleepish (he'd waited till I woke up to drop it on me) and brought many many live things into the house.

I've also stomped a few mice with my work-booted foot. I didn't even think about what I was doing the first time, and it's really not very bloody, so I did it a few more times, when presented with the opportunity.

I also dislike the fact they're VERY nibbley and will destroy things outright, instead of just making them disgusting with urine and feces. At least roaches look the part of filthy!gross!thing. Damn mousy cuteness.

I'm very grateful roaches don't like to live where it's -32C (today's warmer, -27C).

:)

You've gotten lucky so far. German roaches don't care what the temp is outside, as long as you've got central heating. They tend to infest via riding into the household on grocery bags and in cardboard boxes (they hide in the corrugation) and that kind of thing. Even in a clean household they'll eat soap and glue. Yuck. Probably in the winter they're less likely to ride in, but bets are off during the summer.

I don't want either in my household, and having mice would freak me out a little bit, but they don't gross me out like roaches do... ew ew ew. No.

Unfair to Roaches !

A quick Google delivered the following statement from http://blog.hmns.org/?tag=roaches-are-obsessed-with-cleanliness

"Roaches are dirty.

False! Roaches are obsessive compulsive about cleanliness! They spend most of their time resting, and the rest of their time cleaning themselves, much like a cat. Roaches are actually some of the cleanest animals around."

Mice are cute and furry and have a good cartoon image but have disgusting personal habits. Roaches are not furry and have their skeleton on the outside - but they are much cleaner about the house.

Less of this mammalian chauvinism.
