working time what

Since it was mentioned in the first place I have not been able to see the point in having an opt-out for the working time directive, which apparently we are closer to being made to actually conform to, and good. I remember it first coming into play, with an "opt-out" clause which meant that one could say "no honestly I don't mind working whatever hours I'm told to and I'm doing this out of my own free will". It was a joke; it wasn't as if you could get a job, say "actually yeah I do mind and I'm not signing that" and stay in that job.

A common reason for keeping it is the "freedom" for the self-employed to manage their own work. Weirdly, now that I am self-employed myself, I... er... still think that that is bullshit. Apart from the fact that most people are not self-employed anyway, I don't see any reason why I should be required to work overtime to keep a job either. Because that is what it means; it doesn't give people the opportunity to earn more, it gives the opportunity for employers to pay people less and demand more.
