Bathing ape

location: not in the bath
music: dull Radio 4 programme about Obama

I swear that I have forgotten how to take a bath. My shower is on the blink at the moment - it has never really been good since I moved in, it makes this horrible rattling scream the whole time it's on, like a jet engine with an armadillo in it, but it did, previously, at least spray hot water out as well. Now it is a bit quieter but, well, doesn't.

So I thought "I smell, so I'd best have a bath. How does that work again?" First of all I realised that I had to wash out the bathtub, not normally significant when showering. Then I started to run the water. Hm. This is taking quite a long time isn't it? So I got into the bath and sat in the water while it was running. Eventually I got bored with waiting, turned the taps off and, well, continued to sit there. What now? Soap I suppose... but then you have to wash the soap off with water that's already soapy! Similarly with shampoo. Who on earth thought this was a good method of cleaning yourself?

In the end I actually had to get out of the bath as it was really starting to make me anxious, even just the sensation of sitting in water. (I get this when I go swimming, too - if you basically get into water about once a year, it feels constricting, wrong.) I do, however, smell a bit less.

I love baths, I take them every day just to relax, never for hygiene. It's my favorite spot to read.

Anxiety is the price you pay for not smelling rank - feel the fear and do it anyway - the alternative is MUCH worse!

At least I know what to buy you for your birthday - bath accessories ....
