…about this story:

  1. There is more to this than is being reported here. You don’t just get thirty people jumping on a pair of coppers randomly, or because of one girl not picking up some litter. There are all sorts of possibilities, but there's something going on, either background or details of the event that aren't being given.

  2. Not only will that be ignored but the event will be put forward as being a terrible example of teenage violence, despite two of the three people held being in their 30s. (Already happening on Radio 4, which carefully avoids mentioning their ages and implies it was a mob of teenagers.) The usual suspects will line up to write scathing Something Must Be Done With The Feral Youth, Give Them National Service pieces, cheered by the usual moronic peanut gallery on the internet.

To me it sounds like the official story is leaving out when one of the cops gave the kid a slap. Unless everyone present was on PCP I can't imagine a riot breaking out over someone being told sternly to pick up a food wrapper.

Yeah. I could actually believe the idea of a big gang of teenagers trying to lay one on a couple of cops when one of them got challenged for dropping litter and things escalated, except that men in their 30s don't tend to be part of groups of suburban teenagers much.

Actually attacking two people when you outnumber them by that much is a bit weak, though. Wouldn't it just have been better to get the girl away from the cops and then just form a thirty-man wall between them and her?

I doubt they specifically charged down the cops; what seems more likely to me is a bit of an argument which escalated into a tussle and then just got worse and worse with people around piling in. Apparently pepper spray and batons got used - at what stage, mind you, who knows. Certainly cops pepper spraying kids on the street in a lot of neighbourhoods is going to get passers-by involved.

Given that the two policemen got away with just bruises (and one bite) before backup arrived, it doesn't seem to have been all that determined.
