I went onto ebuyer to get myself a little mouse for the Eee, and a mousemat, and of course ended up buying a printer. Well, it was less than half price, and I need a printer of some sort every now and then. It looked quite compact in the pictures, but when it arrived today and I took it out of the box... no it bloody isn't. It's massive. (It's an HP D6160, if you care.)

Where the hell am I going to put this printer? I thought I could fold it up and put it on a shelf or something, because I print about one thing a year, but it doesn't fold up and it's too long for any of my shelves. Now I have to go and buy a new bloody desk. This is false economy.

I've not even configured the damn thing, I'm too annoyed, so it's now sitting reproachfully where my scanner was like a fat white tortoise. Really, I need to move the iMac to the left, and put the printer on the right hand side, but then I have to move my external drive and my UBSB hub, and I still don't have a place to put the scanner, which I do use.

Bloody peripherals.

Printers

I don't like printers that need 6 different colour cartridges. You always find that one runs out ahead of the others and its always a different one. So, you end up always having to have one of each colour spare - a lot of money tied up in cartridges.

We have an old Deskjet - one black cartridge, one colour. I dread the day when we have to replace it weighing up cost of printer against cost of cartridges.

And why, if computers can get so small and so thin do printers get bigger and fatter?

No, I don't like them either. I tried for ages to find a printer which was small and just printed black and white, but apparently you can't get them; they're all photo printers, specifically because they make their money on cartridges. I have never wanted to print a photo and I doubt I ever will. If I did I'd go to a shop and do it, or use an online print service.

epson c6x series.
paper goes in the top, saving space, and the front folds out when you need to use it.

Bite the bullet and get a laser. Monochrome ones are quite small and cost per page is low.
