obligatory mac-hugger keynote-related post

Okay, I was slightly concerned that I might feel like a fool for buying an Eee if Apple announced some sort of ultracompact thing. But they didn't (they don't seem to be going in that direction at all to be honest - the iPhone/iTouch is barely a PDA, let alone a portable computer) and in any case, it wouldn't have been anywhere near as cheap as the Eee. What I actually wanted was new Macbook Pros to replace my current Powerbook with, but it's probably good that they didn't have any, because I really don't need a Powerbook replacement, and I don't want to be handed a flimsy excuse to buy one either.

A good 75% was crap I don't care about; a router with a HD on it, things for the iPhone/iTouch (I don't have either and don't want either) Apple TV (who cares?) and new ways to rip people off via the iTunes Store which won't be available in Europe for ages anyway. On the other hand.

Macbook Air is Thin

It goes into the envelope, it comes out of the envelope....

Nah, it's nice, but I really can't see that I would buy one; if I replace the pbook it will be with something high=powered and 17".

I must be ill.

I positively love my iPhone. I've found it's more useful than I imagined.

What's it useful for?

The iPhone came along at about the time that I was starting to get sick of smartphones anyway, so it's not its fault I suppose. Not 3G though.

I use it for email, google maps, looking up phone numbers, and I particularly like the calendar as I can quickly and easily set appointments and reminders for myself.

We have a friend who is dyslexic - she loves her iPhone because it mostly has pictures and tactile operation rather than using words.

I'm just hoping for a wave of cheap second-hand Powerbooks.

People who had the old 12" might be swapping them for this I suppose.

Theoretically, but I still can't give up my mini PB - a longer screen, even if thinner, is _less_ portable. This feels slightly too powered-down and short on peripherals as well. What I _wanted_ was a 12-inch MBP, but it looks like that will never happen, so next best is probably a MacBook for portable computing and an XBox for gaming, maybe. Or a MacBook Pro and an Eee. Something other than this, which is undoubtedly very cool but just isn't right.

_Everybody_ wanted a 12" MBP, and this really isn't it. It will mollify some of them, the posers who will be satisfied with six months of envelope fun and who have somebody else paying for it, but really, it mostly seems to be an exercise in beating Sony.

The reality distortion field seemed to be lacking power, too. The press seems much less interested than they generally are. I suspect it may be the presence of the Eee, which is generating tremendous buzz with about one per cent of the marketing budget.

See, I'm gagging for it already - but then, I know diddlysquat about the sensible stuff. I just like the way it looks. Prett-eee.

I'm also shit at backing things up, so I like the sound of their Time Capsule.
